You all have probably been here, but for those who haven't, I found it to be quite nice and honestly the pricing seems decent, even though I have not really looked elsewhere. Possibly looking for a new stock for the new Howa, since I'm not sure I'm in love with the one it is coming with. Just thought I would pass it on, plus they are local. Rifle Stocks

Not sure how to add them, but if you can do it for me, that would be great. www.rifle-stocks.com is the site. Hope it comes in handy for some.

I am currently in the process of doing a stock that I ordered from them for my custom 10/22. In fact, that 10/22 I bought from Hylander may end up in it after I get the thing converted to a 17MH2. The stock was pretty rough and took some serious sanding. I started with 60 grit, went to 100, 150, 240, 320 and finally 400. Now I have to seal with Tung Oil, letting the oil go really deep. Then I need to fill the pores, using, again tung oil and sanding to create a slurry, which is used to fill the pores. This may take up to 8 times. Then the hand rubbed oil finish, probably using Tru-oil stock finish. That will probably be 6-8 coats. It is a long process but should look nice when done.
I wanted to do this as a practice stock. My son gave me a really great shooting Parker Hale 7MM Rem Mag. that shoots about 1/2-3/4 inch at 100 yards. But the stock really needs to be refinished. It has no major dings or chips, just a gun that has been used a lot. The bluing also need to be redone, but when done it should look like a $1000 gun. |

That sounds like a ton of work! After putting that much work into it I'd be scared to hunt with it for fear of scratching it up!

As I said, I'm doing this for practice so I can do the Parker Hale and do a nice job. This one will be for a hunting 10/22, or 17, not sure yet.
The nice thing about doing just an oil finish, if it does get scratched or something, a little sandpaper and a little more tung oil and it is fixed. If you do some kind of a spray on finish, poly or something, if it gets scratched, you have to remove the entire finish and start over. A real bummer. I'm looking forward to seeing how this stock is going to look when finished. Will post some pictures. Oh yea, this is not a top of the line stock, it is a second and cost less than $100. |

When I order one I'll most likely get a first and not a second to make it a bit easier. I may pick up a second for my 10/22 just to fiddle with it, but I wanna make sure the Savage is straight shooter...

The difference between a first and second only has to do with fills. That is, on a second, it may have a knot, a small chip, or something similar, that has been filled. It is structurally sound and, in the case of mine, still looks fine, but close inspection will show the fill material. I just went with a second because it was going to be my first project and also it was quite a bit less money. For a 10/22 I decided it would be just fine.

Rifle Stocks I checked it out and agree with you. Like Heath, I made it a favorite. |
