Okay people I got a definitive answer back from Captain Mark Lucero of the California Department of Fish & Game.

The question was:
"Do you need a hunting license in California to hunt ground squirrels on private property with the land owners permission?"

The answer is:
Yes you need a valid California hunting license under Section 700 of the California State Fish & Game code.

§700. Hunting and Fishing Licenses, Possession and Display Of.

( b ) Possession of Hunting License: Every person, while engaged in taking any bird or mammal must have on their person or in their immediate possession a valid hunting license.

Additionally to purchase a license as a non-resident hunter in California you must produce a valid Hunter Safety Certificate or out of state license before non-resident license is issued.

Thanks, John. I figured as much, CA isn't into allowing things fun to happen for free.

It sounded plausible at first and then I woke up and remembered this is California. Plus it took me a day and a half to get an answer. Because they limited the size of sturgeon yesterday and that was a huge event, for them. moon.gif

But you'll have to bring your Hunter Safety Certificate or previous hunting license to California or NO non-resident license. California Laws, what a way to make money. pardon.gif

Do you know what section that might be under Ray? Just so happens we're trying to find that out because we have a squirrel shoot over in Wells, NV. We can't find the law that states it. pardon.gif

Never mind Ray. I found what I needed for Nevada. good.gif
Sorry everybody but the section below is for Nevada, a very progressive state. Maybe I should move there.

License Exemptions: (NAC 503.193) A hunting
license is not required to hunt unprotected wild birds
(English house sparrows and European starlings) or
unprotected mammals (black-tailed jackrabbits,
coyote, skunk, weasel, and ground squirrel).

Make sure you write the contacts name down along with the date and time you spoke with them.

You're going to do whatever you want no matter what. If I asked you what fish & game office you spoke to or who you spoke to you'd say you don't remember. Because if you really did and I doubt that, then they are giving out false information. It's one thing to be young and not know better, it's another to be just plain stupid.

I know I read that right , but, you really mean this old fart here would have to go and take a hunter safety course to get a non- res 3 day license to call a few coyotes or shoot a ground digger up in Cedarville? I knew I wasn't ever gonna go hunt back in your state. Won't take my state hunting license as whatever they need. Huh. Too bad, they loose out on the money it could have generated..Walt
