Here are a couple of pics my buddy took of two sharks he caught recently. The first is a thresher that came in at 490 lbs. just 36 lbs. short of the record I guess. The next one is a Mako he caught. He fishes on the Booyaa, and has been in all the Mako tournaments that were on tv during shark week.

That's a whole of shark! How long did he have to fight to get it in to the boat?

I watched some of those tournaments and it looks like fun! To bad I'm a suzy on the water, LOL. I'd spend all my time heaving over the side!

Don't they blast these guys in the head with a 12 gauge shell attached to the end of a long pole? Maybe Jeph or John will know.

We hooked about a 200 lb thresher shark while salmon fishing in a 16 foot boat a few years back. It cost us a $160 reel and about 300 yards of string. When he hit the end of the line he came out of the water about 10 feet and the line snapping sounded like a 22 round going off. We were trying to crank up to chase him but he was too fast for us. He just melted the inside of the reel.

From what I've seen, when they are that big, they just tie a tail rope to them, and drag them backwards behind the boat. I guess the fish just usually drowns (as funny as that sounds) or dies from trauma of some sort. |
