Can you answer this one?

If you have ever called in more then one coyote on a stand and killed them all, then you'll know what I'm talking about. Example....Call in a coyote and kill it, you wait a few seconds and another one comes into the call and you kill that one, a few seconds another one comes in and you kill that one...... My question is.......Why are coyotes "not bothered by gun shots"?

If you shoot at one and miss, that's another story.

Today was a good day

First of all, I want to thank all of our brothers and sisters who have and are serving in our armed forces, and wish them all a Happy Veterans Day!

Being Veterans Day, I got the day off. I haven't really been hunting very much this season, so anytime I get a chance to go out.....I do. I woke up at 4AM and rolled back over not wanting to get up. I forced myself downstairs to get ready for the days hunt. The whole time I was thinking to myself, "I should just go back to bed huh???"

Well, I am glad I decided to get in the truck and drive to the desert this morning. I started off very slow. I did stand after stand and never saw or heard a thing. I was beginning to want to go home and sleep. Finally at 11Am on my 10th stand, I get a hard charger at 9 minutes in. This is the largest coyote I have ever shot. He weighed 39.5 pounds on my scale. I believe him to be 7+ years old looking at his teeth, that were almost gone!

I do a few more blank stands and then I call in a double. I shoot the close one fast and the second coyote took off. It stopped when I put on the KIYI and thought about coming back for a while. I watched him for a few minutes trying to get him into range. As he began to slip away I catch a flash near the downed coyote. A third coyote came in to check out the squeaker and the dead dog. Bang! It was over for him as well from 60 yards out. Here is a picture of where they wound up laying and then a portrait of the couple. Male and female, 28lb male, 22lb female.

I decide to go try a new place and it turns out to be a jewel. First stand I call in this bobcat. He circled at about 50 yards for a while. The only reason I knew he was there was the crows dive bombing him over and over. He finally poked his head out for me at about 40 yards.

I decide to keep going up this wash and I call in 2 more coyotes. The first one came in behind me and caught a smell and was gone before I could get a shot off. Then I see this coyote come from 150 yards across the wash, kicking up sand as he heads right for my caller at full speed. I was so surprised by it that I actually missed him at 30 yards with my shotgun. That's OK! He ran right towards me after the miss and the Benelli rang his bell at 15 yards.

It was a great day of shotgun calling in Southern California today. Don't believe all the folks who insist the dogs aren't here in good numbers this season. They are here, you just have to adjust your tactics and hunt hard to get them.

Now if I could just get my caller back........

Good Hunting!

First time I ever heard of such a thing was maybe 8 or 9 years ago. Some guys from Arizona were telling everyone on the internet it's the only way to go when you're calling coyotes. Does anyone have any experience hunting off a ladder? If not, then what do you think about it?
