I read from the Hodgdon information they claim Varget to be temperature insensitive. Do the other Hodgdon Extreme powders like Benchmark and H322 have the same temperature insensitivity characteristics? I notice with H335 that I can get very good groups with loads on the hotter side this time of the year, but in the heat of summer I can see pressure signs.

I have been looking at the burn rates of Ramshot TAC and H335 and they seem to be very similar. I also found the consensus is the TAC burns much cleaner than the H335 which is a plus. Anybody have experience with the Ramshot TAC? Is is as temperature sensitive as the H335?

I was given about 500 Remington Powerloc Hollow Points in 55gr and 50 60gr V-Max a while ago and worked up a few loads. Today I was able to get to the range early before the snow storm blew in and was surprised at the results.

All groups shot at 100 yards off of a front bag out of my Savage 12FV 1:9 twist. Temp 40F, Wind Still. I only shot three shot groups to see what potential they had.

The Remington bullets shot very poorly with Varget (1"-2" groups)but shot very well with H335(all sub 1"). The 60gr V-max shot very well with either powder(largest group was just over 1").

I made 5 stands on the way home hoping to call something in, but the storm was blowing in fast. Snow was blowing 30mph sideways by 3:30pm so I called it a day. I have found my loads for calling this winter....Coyotes beware!!

FINALLY! After much gnashing of teeth and chewing of nails (finger not 16 penny) I have finally found a load that shoots like a house on fire in my 22-250 VSF.This is a carefully concocted voodoo & magic laced load...so hold on to your headgear. It typically shoots well under 1/2 inch at 100 yards. It's performance on a fur bearing critter is yet unknown but i WAS able to test it on a ice cold full can of Budweiser and the results were quite eyeopening, at 100 yards one Barnes 36 grain varmint grenade hit the can amidships and literally turned the can inside out and with NO EXIT HOLE! Unreal in my world.I can only guess what this load might inflict on some marauding ground squirrels, but I shall soon find out.
22-250 Remington

CASE: R-P

POWDER: Varget

CHARGE WT: 40.0 grains

BULLET: Barnes 36 grain Varmint grenade

PRIMER: FEDERAL 210M bench rest

OVERALL LENGTH:2.350

VELOCITY:over 4000fps

Also be sure to seat your bullets pointy side up.
This load took a long time to distill but it was worth the hassle.
This load is a mite hot so be SURE TO REDUCE THE LOAD BY 5% and work your way up to insure safety in your firearm.

Primer seating depth

I am transitioning from WSM primers to Federal GM205 primers, (nothing wrong with the Winchester primers BTW). I am aware of the problems that a primer not fully seated can cause, but how deep is to deep? A few of my 205 GM's are as much as .009" below the case head, should I be concerned?

A little background: cases are once fired Military Lake City, they were cleaned, swagged, primer pockets uniformed and full length sized. Then fired once thru a Savage Model 10, decapped, neck sized and pocket uniformed. I am using an RCBS hand priming tool. (To much pressure?)

I've read CCI likes their primers .003 to .004" below the case heads, is as much as .009" for federal primers to much? As long as the firing pin ignites the primer do I care? What should my target primer seating depth be?

Thanks,
Steve

I am helping a buddy work up a load for his 300 RUM and in the process he gives me about 400 .223 bullets. They are a bulk pack from Midway but say Remington 22-55 HP Bullets on the label. I figure they will be a great plinking/rabbit/squirrel round so I will load them up with some surplus brass I have.

I can't find any load data for these bullets, but Remington's site lists their 55gr loads at 3240fps. I am thinking of starting at 26gr of H335 and working the loads up from there. According to the Sierra manual, using 26.6 gr of H335 yields around 3200fps. Anybody have experience with these bullets or have a load to start with?

Range Report

I don't have any pictures, but did go to the range yesterday and was surprised with the results(dumb azz next to me decided to shoot my target for me while I was waiting for the range to clear. ). First off, this Savage 12FV in .223 that I have now is hands down the most consistent and accurate rifle I have owned...that is saying a lot. I found through working up loads that is shoots loads on the light side of a recipe very will, but the mid range loads shoot fair(still very respectable under 1.5" @ 100yd) I decided to use up some various 40gr bullets I had laying around so I decided to load them on the hot side of things.

First load 40gr Sierra HP #1385 loaded with 29gr H335(just under max according to Sierra). Powder filled the case and was just a hair into the neck, not a compressed load but close. Chrono says this load was hovering around the 3700fps mark out of my 26" barrel with no signs of excess pressure. First three shots were touching at 100 yards...that will work for a hunting load.

Second Load 40gr V-Max loaded with 27.4gr H335(max load according to Hornady) Chronoed around 3700fps with no excess pressure signs. First three shots were .75" group. Still plenty good enough for a hunting load. These bullets grouped better at 200, 250 and 300 yards than the Sierra HP.

Either of these loads will work, I am going to work up some "hotter" loads with some other bullets and see how they shoot. This gun seems to perform with light and hot loads the best...interesting.

P.S. BE CAREFUL AND WORK UP TO HOTTER LOADS!!
